The History of Curitiba
Community participation in local decisions has played a very important part in Curitiba history, right from back in the year 1668 when the hamlet of Curitiba was granted permission to become a “pehourinho”, in other words to be promoted from a hamlet to a village with its own local government. However, this change was not enacted until nearly 30 years later, thanks to pressure and initiatives of the local population – about 90 households at that time.
The modern history of Curitiba starts around 1871, when immigrants from Poland arrived and settled in the Curitiba area, and started cultivating it. Even today, Curitiba’s Polish diaspora is one of the biggest in the world.
Throughout its history, Curitiba has a track record of successfully managing urban change. It is a world famous model city due to the implementation of many creative and efficient solutions to a variety of social and economic urban issues, from recycling through to public transport.
Museums Curitiba / museos en Curitiba
For the famous Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer Curitiba became the home to his extravagantly designed museum, the state museum of Curitiba. Its design includes a gravity defying construction made to look like an eye, which is built over a reflective pool, or “water mirror”. In Portuguese this museum is called Museu do Olho, Museum of the Eye.
In keeping with the Curitiba history and culture of science, the museum offers many science exhibitions, including Curitiba biennale / Curitiba biennial, twice-yearly exhibitions.
The Curitiba museum also includes the Oscar Niemeyer Curitiba auditorium where you can hear the orquestra sinfonica do estado de Curitiba play special concerts, well attended by locals and tourists alike.
Other cultural attractions in Curitiba include the Curitiba Churches, including the Largo da Ordem, which is the oldest building in Curitiba, dating back to 1737.
Curitiba’s cultural attractions, museums and churches, as well as the annals of Curitiba history are well worth studying and will enrich your stay in Curitiba beyond measure.
